For a nation that owes its existence to hydraulic culture and the availability of water from rivers, China has an underdeveloped drainage system. It starts right in the homes of people: everyone has loos with totally inadequate plumbing. Just think of how ridiculous it sounds to Westerners when they have to change their habit to the Chinese one: drop used toilet paper into a waste basket beside the loo.
