Japan's anti-nuclear organization holds meeting

Japan's cross-party organization Zero Nuclear Power held its first plenary meeting, Kyodo News reported on Aug 8.

A total of 75 members from different parties of Japan's House of Representatives and Councilors have enrolled in the organization. All members of the organization must accept the "zero nuclear power" principle and promote it as a political idea.

Kyodo News said that more lower house members are likely to join the organization as many people in Japan want the government to abandon nuclear power. The impact of those ideas on public opinion may affect the upcoming general election, it added.

The first plenary session confirmed a proposal to decommission all nuclear reactors in Japan and discussed how to offer legal support to people living in areas where the nuclear plants are located.

The organization is led by 10 members from eight parties, including Shoichi Kondo of the Democratic Party of Japan, Taro Kawano of the Liberal Democratic Party and Tomoko Abe of the Social Democratic Party, according to Kyodo News.
