BEIJING -- "Dark Phoenix," the latest installment of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" film franchise, hit Chinese cinemas Thursday, prior to the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.

The film directed by Simon Kinberg focuses upon the fate of X-Men member Jean Grey after her exposure to a mysterious cosmic force and development of incredible powers that later prove highly destructive.

With "Game of Thrones" star Sophie Turner returning from the previous film "X-Men: Apocalypse" as Jean Grey, the film also features other recurring stars including James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender and Jennifer Lawrence.

Deemed the grand finale of the popular sci-fi film franchise adapted from Marvel's comic series, "Dark Phoenix" is set to be the current cast's last appearance.

The first film was screened in 2000.
