At least three people are reported to have been killed after they were stabbed in a hotel in Glasgow city center.

A male suspect was then shot by an armed police officer.

The Scottish Police Federation confirmed that an officer had been stabbed during the incident and that the officer was being treated in hospital.

Police Scotland urged people to stay away from the West George Street area.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Johnson said in a statement that the police were "continuing to deal with the incident" but that it had been "contained" and that "the wider public is not at risk".

"Armed police officers attended the incident and I can confirm that a male suspect was shot by an armed officer," he said. "I would like to reassure the public that, at this time, we are not looking for anyone else in relation to this incident. I can also confirm that a police officer was injured while dealing with the incident, and that officer is receiving treatment in hospital."

Scotland's first minister, Nicola Sturgeon, said on social media: "The reports from Glasgow city center are truly dreadful. My thoughts are with everyone involved. I am being updated as the situation becomes clearer."

Boris Johnson, the United Kingdom's prime minister, said in a statement that he was "deeply saddened by the terrible incident in Glasgow".

"My thoughts are with all the victims and their families," Johnson added. "Thank you to our brave emergency services who are responding."
