China's Foreign Ministry said on Thursday that China "respects" the choice made by the Honduran people in the country's latest presidential election, and is ready to advance bilateral relations "on the basis of the one-China principle".

Honduras' National Electoral Council said on Wednesday that National Party candidate Nasry Asfura was elected the country's constitutional president in the general elections held on Nov 30, Xinhua News Agency reported.

When asked about the election result and Asfura's campaign pledge of re-establishing "diplomatic ties" with China's Taiwan region, the ministry spokesman Lin Jian said, "The presidential election is an internal affair of Honduras, and China respects the choice made by the Honduran people."

"China stands ready to work with Honduras to advance China-Honduras relations on the basis of the one-China principle," he told a daily news conference in Beijing.
