Glowing plankton in Pingtan, Fujian

Have you ever seen the sea light up at night? At the turn of spring and summer, Fujian's Pingtan hides a romantic miracle unique to the sea. Glowing plankton (a phenomenon produced by the bioluminescence of the sea sparkle) awaken with the tides, turning the waves a luminous blue — locals call it "blue tears".

Like the aurora, it depends on water temperature, wind direction, and a bit of luck to appear. Some wait three nights but see only darkness, while others stumble upon it and find the waves filled with stars.
