The upcoming APEC Tourism Ministerial Meeting in Macao will provide an opportunity not only to showcase China, but also to explore new pathways for tourism cooperation and cultural exchange across the Asia-Pacific region, said Pansy Ho Chiu-king, chairperson and founder of the Global Tourism Economy Research Center.

Macao's selection as host reflects the special administrative region's unique strengths as a multicultural destination and its internationally recognized tourism and hospitality capabilities, Ho told reporters on Wednesday.

The meeting will be held in Macao from June 24 to 28.

"It is about discussing how economies across the APEC region can identify new opportunities and approaches for cooperation in culture and tourism," she said.

Despite its compact size, Macao offers an environment where different cultures and communities coexist, making it an ideal venue for international dialogue.

"We are inclusive. In a very small place, you can see the integration of different cultures and peoples. That is why Macao is a suitable choice," Ho said.

Tourism remains the cornerstone of Macao SAR's economy, and its cultural openness gives it a distinct advantage in connecting with visitors and partners from across the Asia-Pacific region.

Located on about 33 square kilometers of land and home to some 680,000 residents, Macao welcomes around 40 million visitors each year. The city also boasts the world's highest concentration of internationally renowned five-star hotel brands.

"The fact that the APEC Tourism Ministerial Meeting chose Macao speaks for itself," she said. "If we did not have the necessary capabilities, we would not have been selected."

According to Ho, the decision reflects confidence in the city's service standards, multilingual capabilities and experience in hosting large-scale international events.

Ho said she would recommend that ministers visit the Historic Center of Macao, a UNESCO World Heritage site that showcases centuries of cultural exchange between East and West.

They would then be guided through the city's newer districts, where modern resorts, convention facilities and entertainment complexes stand alongside preserved historical neighborhoods.

"In Macao, you can see both the old and the new," she said. "They are connected and have never lost sight of their origins."

Macao is seeking to create a new cycle of growth beyond its traditional tourism strengths by continuously developing new attractions and experiences, Ho said.

Each integrated resort is being encouraged to evolve into a distinctive tourism destination with unique cultural content, exhibitions and entertainment offerings, she added.
