China wants enhanced ties with EU: Wang Yi

Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called for a dynamic, long-term balancing of trade between China and the European Union as part of a sustained and stable growth of China-EU relations.

Wang made the remarks in Beijing on Tuesday when meeting with a delegation led by David McAllister, chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs. It is the first time the committee has sent a delegation to China.

Noting that the European Parliament exercises significant influence over EU foreign policy, Wang said he hoped the delegation could engage with various sectors across China to gain a better understanding of the multi-dimensional and ever-evolving nature of the country.

He urged the EU to foster rational and objective perceptions of China, adopt positive and sound policies toward the country and help steer relations toward steady and sustained progress.

Wang stressed that history and reality have proven that China and the EU are partners, not rivals, highlighting the deeply interwoven interests between the two sides and their shared positions on major issues, including upholding multilateralism, supporting the United Nations and safeguarding free trade.

Both sides should uphold their partnership and examine and handle specific issues arising in the course of bilateral relations within this framework, Wang said. He said economic and trade issues concerning China and the EU should not be politicized and advised against the overstretching of security concerns in exchanges.

China is ready to enhance coordination and cooperation with the EU in global affairs to promote an equal, orderly, multipolar world and a universally beneficial and inclusive form of economic globalization, Wang added.

The European side said the EU attaches great importance to its relations with China, admires the tremendous development achievements China has made, and opposes "decoupling" from China.

Noting that EU-China relations are at a critical juncture, the European side said it welcomes the resumption of exchanges between legislative bodies, and stands ready to strengthen dialogue with China, enhance mutual understanding and promote cooperation.

These efforts are expected to push for the healthy and stable development of EU-China relations, it added.

Acknowledging China's vital role on major issues in today's world, the European side said it is willing to maintain close communication with China, particularly in strengthening cooperation in areas such as green development and climate change response.
