Carbon fiber helps power China's advanced manufacturing

chinadaily.com.cn | Updated: 2026-07-22 17:14

A single strand of carbon fiber, thinner than one-third the width of a human hair, is playing a pivotal role in reshaping China's industrial landscape, serving as a critical driver behind the country's high-end manufacturing transformation.

Dubbed "black gold" within the advanced materials sector, carbon fiber boasts a strength seven to nine times that of steel while weighing significantly less. This unique combination of extreme strength, lightness, and durability has rendered the high-performance material indispensable across multiple strategic industries.

In aerospace, the material is increasingly deployed in aircraft structures and rocket components where weight reduction is paramount. On the ground, carbon fiber composites are enabling next-generation new energy vehicles to improve their energy efficiency, while boosting the performance of large-span bridges.

China has been rapidly expanding its carbon fiber applications in recent years, particularly establishing a dominant global position in engineering composite materials.

Behind a filament almost too small to see lies a broader shift in China's industrial capability, as advanced materials continue to turn ambitious concepts into real-world engineering achievements.
