Chinese scientists achieve breakthrough in germanium-rich mineral research

Chinese scientists have identified a new germanium-rich mineral, Wusiheite, marking the country's first discovery of an independent germanate mineral and providing direct mineralogical evidence for how the rare metal germanium becomes exceptionally concentrated in ore deposits.

The mineral, which was approved earlier this month by the International Mineralogical Association's Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification, was discovered by researchers from Chang'an University in Shaanxi province, the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry in Guangdong province and the CAS' Institute of Geochemistry in Guizhou province.

Germanium is a scarce strategic metal essential to modern industries, including semiconductors, fiber-optic communications, infrared optics, solar cells, and aerospace monitoring systems. Due to its rarity in the Earth's crust and the fact that it almost never forms independent minerals, germanium has long been recovered mainly as a byproduct of lead-zinc and coal mining.

The Sichuan-Yunnan-Guizhou region is one of the world's most prominent germanium-enriched lead-zinc areas. In most of these deposits, germanium substitutes for zinc within the crystal structure of sphalerite and is extracted as a companion resource. The Wusihe lead-zinc deposit in Sichuan province is a typical example.

Since 2023, researchers have conducted systematic mineralogical studies on the deposit. Their work revealed abundant independent germanium-bearing minerals, among which Wusiheite stands out as a newly discovered germanium-rich species.

Under a microscope, it appears as transparent, tabular crystals measuring 1 to 20 micrometers, and is dark gray in reflected light with no pleochroism. With an average germanium oxide content of 72 percent, Wusiheite is the third germanium-rich mineral identified at the Wusihe deposit, following Ruizhongite and Wenqingite.

This discovery not only identifies the critical germanium-host minerals in the Wusihe deposit but also provides crucial direct mineralogical evidence for understanding the evolution of germanium-rich hydrothermal fluids and the super-enrichment mechanism of this dispersed metal.
