A paralyzed pensioner who has survived two suicide attempts is suing his four daughters to escape life in a Beijing care home.
Jiang Yujiao, 73, is demanding to move in with his eldest daughter, as well as 500 yuan a month from each child.
Although filed with Fangshan district court, the case was heard at Chengguan Nursing Home, where the plaintiff has lived since suffering a debilitating stroke in late 2010.
Zhao Yanyan, who works at the court, described the care home as "above average", adding: "Three people stay in one room. They have a television, air conditioner and can play cards. The diet includes at least one meat dish a day. The medical care is also good."
However, presiding judge Kui Aiqing explained that Jiang's unhappiness stems from dormitory life and loneliness, as he receives few visits from his daughters. "This elderly man has led a family life in past decades and worries he will die alone in the nursing home. Two of his children have only visited him twice," he said.
In April this year, Jiang attempted to cut his throat with a fruit knife before being stopped by nurses. He then starved himself for five days.
Two of his daughters have so far refused to sign the release papers.
Kui, who is yet to deliver a verdict, told METRO the case is similar to five or six others he has heard this year.
