Zhao Linzhong, a deputy of the National People's Congress, urged that heavy metal pollution control should be introduced into the comprehensive evaluation of economic and social development.
Achievement in heavy metal pollution control should also be incorporated into government officials' performance assessments, Zhao said.
The deputy, who is looking forward to perfecting the construction of the law on pollution control, said that ineffective supervision of the heavy metal industry results in severe pollution.
Local governments pay more attention to expanding their economy and tend to neglect environmental protection, Zhao said.
