Lawmakers to consider abolishing 'laojiao'

BEIJING -- Chinese lawmakers will deliberate a motion on abolishing "laojiao," or reeducation through labor, at a bi-monthly session next week.

According to a recommended agenda released Monday for the December 23-28 session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), China's top legislature, the motion submitted by the State Council for deliberation will include abolishing a decision on "the issue of reeducation through labor" as well as a supplementary regulation to the issue.

During the session, lawmakers will also deliberate a draft resolution on adjusting and improving the country's birth policies.
