Guizhou Minzu University sees cooperation with New Zealand

Guizhou Minzu University, in Guiyang, capital city of Guizhou province, received a visit on February 26 from a New Zealand delegation led by Pita Sharples, minister of New Zealand’s Maori Affairs Department to bolster mutual cooperation.

Students of Guizhou Minzu University, wearing folk costumes, welcomed the delegation by performing ethnic songs on Lusheng (a kind of traditional Chinese ethnic instrument) at the east gate of Yifu Library. Ngahiwi Tomoana, a member of the delegation, also sang a Maori ethnic song, playing guitar to show their mutual respects.

"It's my second visit to Guizhou Minzu University, and the fifth time to China. I can see the development here. Obviously, it's remarkable."said Tomoana.

The delegation aims to strengthen cooperation with Guizhou Minzu University, promoting student exchanges and cross-cultural communications based on the foundations they have laid since the first visit in 2012.

Wang Fengyou, secretary of the party committee of Guizhou Minzu University, expressed the intention to set up a Confucius Institute in Maori, New Zealand. They are looking forward to enjoying more cooperation and exchanges with the country. Pita Sharples, in return, said he would spare no effort to achieve their common goal.
