Located 150 kilometers northwest of Nairobi, capital of Kenya, Lake Nakuru is one of the most famous tourist destinations among all the lakes in the country, featuring a large number of the pink flamingos, attracted by the abundant blue-green algae on its shorelines.
Due to the large population of flamingos, which used to reach two millions a decade ago, Roger Peterson, a famous ornithologist, termed the lake as the "greatest bird spectacle on earth."
Besides its magnificent bird life, Lake Nakuru National Park is home to many wild animals.
It's easy to spot southern white rhinos, big herds of buffaloes roaming the open grasslands, eland and shaggy waterbucks, Rothschild giraffe and big herds of zebras. Along with leopards and lions, hippos can also be found in the northern part of the lake.
