Smart vertical farming takes off in Chengdu

A strawberry vertical farm in Chengdu's Wenjiang district began commercial operations in September. Covering 2,300 square meters with 11 layers, its annual output can reach 73 metric tons, 30 to 40 times that of open-field farming. [Photo provided to chinadaily.com.cn]

"Traditionally, strawberries are only grown from winter to spring in Chengdu, but this factory enables year-round production of high-quality strawberries," Shi said.

This smart vertical farming technology is also being promoted and implemented in other regions, including Chengdu's Pidu district and the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region, she added.
