Visiting State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held bilateral talks with Myanmar's Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin on Sunday, saying China supports the people of Myanmar in exploring a development path that suits its national conditions.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the seventh Lancang-Mekong Cooperation Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Bagan, a central city of Myanmar. It will be chaired by Wang and attended by his counterparts from Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam.

The "pauk-phaw" ties between China and Myanmar are unbreakable and rock-solid, have withstood changes in the international landscape and will not be affected by internal changes in each country, Wang said.

He added China's friendly policy toward Myanmar is for all the people of Myanmar and Beijing will support Naypyitaw in safeguarding the country's legitimate interests as well as its national dignity on international occasions.

For his part, U Wunna Maung Lwin expressed heartfelt thanks to China for its selfless assistance to Myanmar's development, pledging his country will continue to support China's legitimate position on issues including Taiwan, Hong Kong, Tibet, Xinjiang and human rights.

U Wunna Maung Lwin briefed Wang on the situation in Myanmar, saying his country would continue to advance the process of democratic transition.

In response, Wang said, China hopes all parties in Myanmar can adhere to rational consultation and achieve political reconciliation and national long-term stability within the framework of the constitution and law at an early date.

The two sides agreed to speed up the construction of the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, or CMEC, and would discuss "CMEC Plus" cooperation in a timely manner so as to enhance bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

China is willing to strengthen coordination with Myanmar to upgrade Lancang-Mekong cooperation, Wang said.

He stressed Lancang-Mekong cooperation should step up alignment with China's Global Development Initiative and the Global Security Initiative, so as to build a pilot demonstration zone for the two initiatives.

U Wunna Maung Lwin said he thought highly of the initiatives, adding they are of vital importance to upholding world peace and multilateralism and promoting common development. He also said Myanmar would actively participate.

The two sides exchanged views on cooperation between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. China appreciated the positive and significant role played by Myanmar as the country coordinator for China-ASEAN relations, Wang said. He added China firmly supports ASEAN's centrality in the regional architecture.

After the talks, the two sides witnessed the exchange of documents on bilateral cooperation in fields such as economic technology, anti-pandemic and agriculture.
