[people.com.cn:] Changchun boasts of the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics and has set up its own “Silicon Valley.” In addition the 20th Congress of the International Commission for Optics will be held in the city in August this year. But the city’s optoelectronic industry development is not so satisfactory. What are the major difficulties the city has to overcome to develop the optoelectronic industry and what do you plan to do?

[Mr Wang Jiaji:] Changchun has distinct advantages in optoelectronic industry development, which may be generalized as “four superiorities.” First, we are able to develop new techniques; second, we have high-quality product components; third, we can develop core technique; and fourth, we have excellent colleges as technical support. For the reasons above, the central government is determined to set up an optoelectronic industry base in Changchun. But we also have problems, such as shortage of funds, lack of leading companies, a weak base and a shortage of talented people.

[Mr Mayor:] I add one more point. We’ll take measures to solve those problems mentioned. First, we’ll build an optoelectronic industry area, covering 10 square kilometers to attract more leading companies in the optoelectronic industry. We will also improve the city’s financial environment, attracting more foreign venture investment companies to financially support Changchun’s optoelectronic industry enterprises. Finally, we’ll attract some talented people by offering a high salary.
