Shanghai forum explores AI's maritime potential

China State Shipbuilding Corp, the world's largest shipbuilder, hosted a forum on Saturday focusing on the application and future potential of artificial intelligence in the maritime and shipbuilding industries.

The forum was part of the World Artificial Intelligence Conference, which runs from Friday through Monday. It attracted more than 200 participants from government departments, research institutes and businesses.

Yan Xinping, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Ørnulf Jan Rødseth, manager of the Norwegian Forum for Autonomous Ships, Joseph Morelos, a lead specialist at Lloyd's Register, and other keynote speakers shared their insights on smart ship navigation, emerging international standards and AI's potential to transform the maritime industry.

During the forum, CSSC showcased progress made by its engineers in integrating AI into shipbuilding and maritime operations, including the development of an intelligent navigation system, an autonomous unmanned vessel and a digital testing system for evaluating ship performance.

In a panel discussion, experts and industry representatives exchanged views on how AI technologies can better support the green, sustainable and high-value development of the maritime and shipbuilding industries.
